Primary Sports Curriculum
Children in Years 1-6 have one hour of Physical Education with a specialist each week; children in Pre-Primary have a 40 minute lesson. All classes also do their own PE throughout the week in the form of daily fitness & game activities, extra sport sessions, use of playground equipment and general play. The total time of physical activity is approximately 2 hours per week.
Physical education lessons:
Years Pre-Primary-3: Focus on the fundamental skills i.e. throwing, catching, striking, kicking, trapping & bouncing and locomotion. Simple games are played that practice these skills
Years 4-6: The fundamental movement skills continue to be practiced but more in intensive skill sessions followed by game situations in sports that many children participate in e.g. football, soccer, netball, basketball, hockey, gymnastics, cricket and tee-ball.
Annual Carnivals
- Swimming Carnival for Years 4-6. This follows two weeks of in-term swimming.
- Cross Country for Years 1-6.
- Athletics Carnival for Pre-Primary-6.
Up to and including 2007, the Primary school has been a member of the Southern River Sports Association enabling us to participate in the following interschool carnivals:
- Cross Cross Country
- Athletics Carnival
- Lightning Carnival(football, soccer, hockey & netball) for Year 7s only.
However as of 2008, will be a member of WACSSA (WA Christian Schools Sports Association) which will enable us to participate in the Interschool Swimming Carnival also.
To help with the children’s (and teachers’) fitness during cross country and athletics time, we have the Carey marathon. This involves anyone who is interested running 130 laps of the Primary school oval, which is the equivalent of 42km. The children have a card to keep a tally of how many laps completed, and when the goal is achieved (there is no time limit) a special certificate is given at the next assembly.
